How do I find tide times for a location?

Finding UK tide times for a specific location is easy with UK Tide Times. Use the Tide Search option to search for the beach, town, city or coastal location you are interested in.

Once you have selected a location, you can view the available tide predictions, including the times and heights of high tide and low tide. You can also select the date you are interested in to check the predicted tides for that day.

If you are unsure which location to choose, you can browse our regions and counties to find coastal locations throughout the UK.

Why isn't my location listed?

We are continually adding locations to UK Tide Times, but it is not possible to include every beach, harbour, town and coastal location in the UK.

Some locations may also not have suitable tidal data available for us to provide reliable tide predictions. In other cases, a smaller coastal location may be covered by a nearby tidal station or prediction location.

If you cannot find the location you are looking for, you can request a location to be added to UK Tide Times. We will review your request and consider adding the location where suitable tide data is available.

How are locations organised into regions?

Locations on UK Tide Times are organised into geographical coastal regions to make it easier to find tide times around the UK.

Our regions include the East Coast, North East, North West, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South Coast, South East, South West and Wales.

Each location is assigned to the region that best represents its position around the UK coastline. You can browse the regions to discover coastal locations and find the tide times available for each area.

Can I request a new location to add to the website?

Yes. Please do!

If you cannot find a beach, harbour, town, city or other coastal location on UK Tide Times, you can request for it to be added.

We welcome location suggestions from visitors because they help us understand which areas people are interested in seeing on the website.

To request a location, visit our Request a Location page and provide the name of the location and the UK coastal region it belongs to.

We will review the request and, where suitable data is available, consider adding the location to the website.

How do I request a location to be added?

If you would like to see a particular location added to UK Tide Times, visit our Request a Location page.

Simply enter the name of the beach, coastline, town, city or other coastal location you would like to see added and select the region where the location is situated. You do not need to provide your name or email address.

Once submitted, your request will be reviewed and we will consider whether suitable tide information is available for that location.

We cannot guarantee that every requested location will be added, but we appreciate every suggestion and will endeavour to add suitable locations as quickly as possible.

How does the moon affect tides?

What are sunrise and sunset times?

Sunrise is the time when the Sun appears above the horizon at a particular location, while sunset is the time when the Sun appears to move below the horizon.

Sunrise and sunset times change throughout the year because of the Earth's orbit around the Sun and the Earth's tilted axis. The length of daylight therefore varies depending on the time of year and your location.

Are the sun and moon times specific to each location?

What is the Tide Calculator?

The Tide Calculator is a tool designed to help you calculate or explore predicted tide information for a selected coastal location and date.

It can be used to find useful information about high tide, low tide, tide times and tide heights without having to manually search through individual tide tables.

The Tide Calculator is particularly useful when you want to quickly check predicted tide information for a particular location or date.

How do I use the Tide Calculator?

To use the Tide Calculator, select the coastal location and date you are interested in and enter the relevant information requested by the calculator.

The tool will then provide the available predicted tide information for that location and date, including relevant high tide and low tide times and heights.

Remember that tide predictions are calculated predictions and actual sea levels can be affected by weather conditions such as wind and atmospheric pressure. For activities where accurate or current marine conditions are important, always check appropriate official marine information and local safety advice.

What are tide graphs?

Tide graphs provide a visual representation of how the predicted sea level changes throughout the day at a particular coastal location.

Instead of viewing tide times and heights only as a list of figures, a tide graph allows you to see the overall pattern of the rising and falling tide throughout the day.

Tide graphs can make it easier to identify periods of high tide and low tide and understand the changing tidal range at a location. They can be particularly useful when planning activities such as coastal walks, beach visits, fishing and boating.

As with other tide information on UK Tide Times, tide graphs show predicted tides rather than guaranteed measurements of the actual sea level.

What is sea level data?

Sea level data provides information about the height of the sea at a particular coastal location, measured against an established reference level or tidal datum.

Sea level information can be used to understand how the height of the sea changes over time and how observed or predicted water levels relate to a defined reference point.

Sea level data is useful for understanding tides, tidal ranges and coastal water levels. It can also provide additional context when looking at predicted tide times and heights for locations around the UK.

Where does UK Tide Times get its tide data?

UK Tide Times uses tidal prediction data from established tidal data sources to provide predicted high tide and low tide times for locations around the UK coastline.

The availability and coverage of tide predictions can vary between locations depending on the tidal data available for that area. We use the available data to provide useful tide information for beaches, harbours, towns, cities and other coastal locations.

How is tide height measured?

Tide height is the predicted height of the sea at a particular time in the tidal cycle. It is normally expressed in metres.

Tide heights are measured against a defined reference level, known as a tidal datum. This allows predicted water levels to be described consistently for a particular location.

For example, if a tide prediction shows a high tide height of 4.5 metres, this represents the predicted sea level relative to the tidal datum used for that location.

The actual sea level can be higher or lower than the predicted height because weather conditions, including wind and atmospheric pressure, can affect coastal water levels.

What datum are tide heights measured against?

Tide heights are measured against a defined vertical reference level called a tidal datum. The datum provides a consistent reference point from which predicted tide heights can be calculated and displayed.

The particular datum used can vary depending on the tidal station and the source of the tidal data. This means that tide heights should always be considered in the context of the reference datum used for that location.

This is also one reason why tide heights from two different sources should not necessarily be compared without checking that they are using the same reference level.

What is a tidal prediction?

A tidal prediction is a calculation of when high tide and low tide are expected to occur and the predicted height of the sea at those times.

Tidal predictions are calculated using information about the regular movements and patterns of the tides at a particular location. The gravitational effects of the Moon and Sun, together with the characteristics of the location, are used to produce predictions of future tidal conditions.

Are the tide predictions actual measurements?

No.

The tide times and heights shown on UK Tide Times are predictions rather than live measurements of the sea.

What do high tide and low tide mean?

High tide is the point in the tidal cycle when the sea reaches its highest predicted level at a particular location. Low tide is when the sea reaches its lowest predicted level.

The time between high tide and low tide is known as the falling or ebbing tide, while the period between low tide and high tide is known as the rising or flooding tide.

The difference in water level between high tide and low tide is known as the tidal range. The tidal range can vary considerably between different locations around the UK and from one day to another.

What does the height of the tide mean?

The tide height is the predicted height of the sea at a particular time in the tidal cycle. Tide heights are normally expressed in metres and are measured against a defined vertical reference level, known as a tidal datum.

For example, a tide table might show a high tide at a particular time with a predicted height of 4.8 metres. This means the predicted sea level at high tide is 4.8 metres above the reference level used for that tidal prediction.

Does high tide mean the sea is in?

How long is there between high and low tide?

How do tide times work?

Where does the sea go when the tide goes out?

The sea doesn't actually go anywhere when the tide goes out. The water is being pulled away from the coastline by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun.

As the Earth rotates, different parts of the coastline move through areas of higher and lower sea level. When your local area moves away from the tidal bulge, the sea level falls and the tide goes out.

The water that leaves your beach or harbour flows out into the surrounding sea. At the same time, another area of the coastline is experiencing a rising tide as water moves towards it.

So, when you see the tide going out, the water hasn't disappeared — it has simply moved elsewhere as part of the continuous tidal cycle.

Yes, it works around the entire World - the app and web version of UK Tide Times can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

The website is specifically focused on tide times and coastal locations around the United Kingdom, so its tide information is intended for UK locations rather than locations elsewhere in the world.

If you are travelling outside the UK, you can still use UK Tide Times to check predicted tides for UK locations.
